Increase (inc)
Chart symbol: a V (two stitches sharing one base) Counting: makes 2, uses 1.
How to work it
Work two stitches into the same stitch. That is all an increase is: "inc" in a pattern means "2 sc in the next stitch" unless it says otherwise.
WHERE the increases sit matters as much as how many there are. Spread evenly around a round they grow a flat disc or a sphere; stacked on one side round after round they steer the fabric into a bend. The same stitches in a different order make a different shape.
Other names for the same stitch
- Modern: inc, "2 sc in next st", "sc twice in next".
- Antique: "widen" or "2 in 1."
Where you'll meet it
All shaping. Six increases per round of sc keeps work flat; fewer makes a cup; none makes a tube.
