The magic ring
Also called the magic circle or adjustable ring. It is THE way to start a piece worked in the round: the first stitches close around an adjustable loop, and pulling the tail cinches the center completely shut. No hole.
How
- Wrap the yarn into a loop around two fingers, tail behind.
- Insert the hook through the loop, pull up a strand, chain 1 to lock.
- Work the round's stitches (usually 6 sc) INTO the big loop, over both strands.
- Pull the tail: the ring closes and the stitches tighten into a disc.
The alternatives you'll see in patterns
- "Ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd chain from hook": same result, tiny hole, no adjustable tail. Structurally identical (6 stitches into one point).
- "Ch 4, join with sl st to form a ring, work 8 sc into the ring": the chain-loop start, standard in older patterns; leaves a small open center that lace often wants.
All three read the same way for counting: round 1 simply HAS its stated number of stitches, worked into a shared center.
