Single crochet (sc)

Chart symbol: an x or a + Counting: makes 1, uses 1.

How to work it

1. Insert the hook into the next stitch.
2. Yarn over, pull up a loop (two loops on the hook).
3. Yarn over, draw through both loops.

The workhorse of amigurumi: short, dense, and nearly square (a single crochet is about as tall as it is wide), which is why the classic six-increases-per-round recipe makes a flat disc.

Other names for the same stitch

• Modern US: single crochet (sc).
• UK: this same stitch is called DOUBLE crochet (dc). Every UK pattern is shifted one name up: check which convention a pattern uses before starting.
• Antique US: "Sg. C." or sometimes "plain stitch."
